BFI London Film Festival Announces New Premieres for 70th Edition

The 70th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) has significantly expanded its program, adding a wealth of new films and series to its already impressive roster. This year's festival, running from October 7-18, is set to feature a diverse collection of 251 titles, encompassing feature films, short subjects, episodic series, and immersive art installations originating from 88 different nations. Notably, a substantial 43 percent of these works are directed by women, underscoring the festival's commitment to gender representation in filmmaking. The expanded lineup includes 33 world premieres, 16 international debuts, and 20 European premieres, all of which will be screened for the first time to UK audiences.

Among the highly anticipated world premieres are Brad Bird's animated feature, 'Ray Gunn,' which will subsequently launch globally on Netflix in December, and Laika's new animation, 'Wildwood,' directed by Travis Knight. Other notable world premieres include Anthony Wonke’s British boxing biopic 'In the Shadows,' Carol Morley’s '7 Miles Out,' and Sean Mathias’s adaptation of 'Frank and Percy.' The festival will also host international premieres such as Boots Riley’s 'I Love Boosters' and Tony Gilroy’s classical musician portrait 'Behemoth!'. These additions join previously announced highlights like the ten competition films, Simon Stone’s 'Elsinore' as the opening film, and Jesse Eisenberg’s 'The Debut' as the closing feature. The festival also celebrates the return of acclaimed filmmakers such as Paweł Pawlikowski, Martin McDonagh, Taika Waititi, and Ava DuVernay, alongside introducing a new generation of talent with numerous directorial debuts.

Beyond the main screenings, the festival will present several special programs, including the First Feature Competition, honoring debut filmmakers, and the Documentary Competition, which will award the Grierson Award. Special presentations include Ava DuVernay’s '14th,' a deep dive into the U.S. Constitution's 14th amendment, and a major new restoration of Powell and Pressburger’s 'Gone to Earth.' The Immersive Special Presentation will feature 'Water Body,' an audiovisual exploration of water’s role in life. These diverse offerings collectively reflect a dynamic era of social change, showcasing art that captures the complexities of contemporary life through cinematic thrills, ethical dilemmas, and themes of community and care, inviting audiences to engage with profound visions from artists worldwide.
