“In the Shadows” Production Team Takes on Self-Distribution After UK Distributor’s Collapse

The team behind the British boxing biographical film "In the Shadows" has taken proactive steps to ensure its release after facing an unexpected setback. Following the financial difficulties of their intended U.K. distributor, True Brit Entertainment, the film's producers have successfully arranged a self-distribution strategy. This ensures that the compelling narrative of British-Somali boxer Ramla Ali will reach audiences, commencing with its global debut at the prestigious BFI London Film Festival.

The film, which chronicles the remarkable journey of Ramla Ali, a pioneering British-Somali boxer, model, and UNICEF Ambassador, was initially slated for release through True Brit Entertainment. However, when the distributor entered administration in late September, the project faced an uncertain future. In a critical move, the producers secured additional financial backing from their executive producers, enabling them to launch a self-release plan for the U.K. theatrical run.

Lee Magiday, a BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee, who produced the film alongside Madeleine Sanderson, described the situation as an 'eleventh-hour' rescue. They learned in mid-September that funds for print and advertising (P&A) were no longer available. This prompted a swift appeal to their backers, who generously provided the necessary additional investment to move forward. The film's premiere at the London Film Festival on October 9th will proceed as planned, marking a significant milestone for the production.

Following its festival debut, "In the Shadows" is scheduled for screenings in over 30 locations across the U.K. A special screening and Q&A session with the cast and creative team will take place on October 30th at London's Genesis Cinema, located near the film's shooting sites. The timing is particularly noteworthy, as Ramla Ali herself is set to participate in a world title fight in the U.S. on November 8th, after which she will return to the U.K. to support further special event screenings and Q&As for the film.

Magiday and Sanderson extended their gratitude to executive producers Richard Fearn, Anushka Shah, and Natasha Mudhar for their crucial financial contributions. They also acknowledged the support of Will Clarke at Altitude Films, the global sales agent for "In the Shadows," who connected them with Ben Metcalf at Metis Films. Metis Films is now managing the physical distribution, with former True Brit executive Kate Neville-Towle overseeing marketing efforts. Sanderson highlighted the strong community spirit surrounding the project, noting that many people are invested in the film and Ramla Ali's story.

Directed by Anthony Wonke and starring Jasmine Jobson from "Top Boy," "In the Shadows" portrays the inspiring life of Ramla Ali. As a refugee in London, Ali secretly pursued boxing, eventually becoming the first Somali-British professional boxing champion, defying her conservative Muslim parents. The film also delves into her relationship with Richard Moore, her future husband, who embraced Islam. The narrative explores Ali's relentless determination to overcome obstacles both inside and outside the boxing ring, which propelled her to become the first boxer to represent Somalia at the 2020 Olympic Games and participate in the first professional female boxing match in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, it highlights the couple's journey as they navigate racial and cultural complexities.

Magiday drew parallels between the challenges faced during the film's production and Ramla Ali's personal journey. She emphasized that the film's creation, much like Ali's story, has been a constant struggle, driven by sheer will and determination rather than extensive industry support. Magiday underscored the film's profound message of hope, portraying it as more than just a typical boxing story. It explores themes of cultural acceptance, familial understanding, community belonging, and the discovery of love, making it an exceptionally relevant and powerful narrative.
