Japan IP Market to Return to Cannes in 2027 as Tokyo Partnership Continues

The Japan IP Market is poised for its second consecutive staging in Cannes, scheduled for May 2027. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Cannes Film Market and TIFFCOM, the content market arm of the Tokyo International Film Festival, aims to deepen international engagement and expand the global presence of Japanese intellectual properties. The upcoming iteration is slated for May 14-15, continuing a successful alliance that originated with Japan's honored status at a previous Cannes event.

This renewed collaboration was announced during TIFFCOM in Tokyo, amidst discussions on strategies for Japan to forge new international alliances following its designation as the Country of Honor in Cannes. A key figure in these discussions was Alexandra Zakharchenko, who oversees industry programs at the Cannes Film Market. The executive director of the Cannes Film Market, Guillaume Esmiol, underscored the significance of this ongoing partnership. He highlighted how Japan's prior success as the Country of Honor demonstrated the potent outcomes achievable when a concentrated national focus generates enduring opportunities for the industry. The Japan IP Market exemplifies such an outcome, fostering a collaboration that extends beyond a single event and provides Japanese intellectual properties with enhanced access to global partners. Esmiol expressed enthusiasm for the continued joint efforts with TIFFCOM, aiming to create more avenues for rights holders to connect with international producers and collaborators, cultivate fresh adaptations, and introduce their narratives to worldwide audiences.

The inaugural Japan IP Market took place in May 2026, launched as part of a series of initiatives surrounding Japan's tenure as the Country of Honor at the Cannes Film Market. This event served as a crucial platform, bringing Japanese rights holders into direct interaction with international industry professionals through various formats including pitches, one-on-one meetings, and insightful industry discussions. Prominent Japanese entertainment companies such as Kadokawa, Shochiku, and Toei Company were active participants. The roster of speakers featured industry leaders, including Fujimura Tetsu, who is both the executive producer of "One Piece" and the founder and CEO of Filosophia, Inc. Zakharchenko further elaborated on the market's objective, stating that it is designed to cultivate optimal conditions for business opportunities between Japanese rights holders and international entities. She emphasized that by convening these parties in Cannes, the initiative can convert the increasing global interest in Japanese content into tangible adaptation agreements and acquisitions, simultaneously fostering new collaborative ventures.

Shiina Yasushi, executive adviser at UNIJAPAN and CEO of TIFFCOM, acknowledged the vital role of the partnership with the Cannes market for Japan's audiovisual sector. He characterized the Cannes market as the foremost market linked to any film festival globally. Yasushi stated that engaging with the international professionals assembled there and collaborating with them is essential for transforming Japanese intellectual property into globally resonant content. Ikeda Kaori, managing director of TIFFCOM, observed that the initial edition of the market clearly demonstrated the strong global interest from producers and partners in Japanese intellectual property. She expressed delight that through the ongoing partnership, which links Cannes in May with the Tokyo IP Market in October, more professionals will have the chance to directly engage with Japanese rights holders and explore the extensive variety of Japanese intellectual property. The complete lineup of participating companies and the detailed program for the 2027 event will be revealed in the coming months.
