"La Bola Negra," whose title is inspired by an unfinished work of Lorca, intricately weaves a narrative across three generations, set against the backdrop of critical junctures in Spanish history. The story follows Carlos (Milo Quifes) in 1932, navigating a fractured Spain, Sebastián (Guitarricadelafuente) in 1937, forging unexpected connections amidst conflict, and Alberto (Carlos González) in 2017, unearthing a family secret that unveils suppressed historical truths. The screenplay was a collaborative effort between Calvo, Ambrossi, and Alberto Conejero, drawing inspiration from Conejero's play "La piedra oscura."
The film has already garnered substantial international acclaim, including the Best Director prize for Calvo and Ambrossi at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, followed by the coveted People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. This triumph marked "La Bola Negra" as the first Netflix production to secure TIFF's top honor and the first international film to do so in 15 years. Furthermore, "La Bola Negra" has been designated as Spain's official submission for the Academy Award for International Feature Film. The movie is set to premiere in New York City and Los Angeles on October 16th, with a broader release across the United States and Canada to follow. Select theaters will offer screenings in 35mm, and the film will become available on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on December 2nd.
In addition to "La Bola Negra," the Gotham Anniversary Tribute will be presented to LAIKA, and Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute for his work on "Ink" at this year's gala.
This recognition of "La Bola Negra" at the Gotham Film Awards underscores the enduring power of storytelling to transcend cultural boundaries and historical periods. It serves as a reminder that profound narratives, when told with vision and artistic integrity, can resonate deeply with global audiences, sparking dialogue and fostering a deeper understanding of human experience. The film's success, particularly in bringing Lorca's timeless themes to a new generation, highlights the importance of preserving and reinterpreting literary legacies through contemporary cinematic art.
