Microsoft Accused of Sabotaging Blade Development and Orchestrating Arkane's Closure

The Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV), a French game workers' union, has put forth a grave accusation against Microsoft: intentionally undermining the progress of Marvel's Blade, subsequently leveraging the resulting setbacks to rationalize the closure of Arkane Studios.

The union insists that the development of Blade was proceeding smoothly, maintaining a quality consistent with Arkane's acclaimed past projects like the Dishonored series and Prey. Despite this, the STJV claims that staff now confront the grim reality of their studio's potential closure, a situation directly orchestrated by Microsoft for what the union describes as specious economic reasons. They assert that a 19-month hiring freeze imposed by Microsoft artificially inflated development times and expenses, which were then conveniently presented as grounds for the shutdown.

The STJV contends that closing Arkane defies sound financial logic, potentially incurring greater costs than allowing the studio to complete Blade. Furthermore, they highlight Arkane's profitability, albeit deeming it "not profitable enough for Microsoft." The union firmly places accountability for Arkane's predicament and its employees' distress squarely on Microsoft's shoulders. They demand that the company, given its immense resources, fulfill a moral obligation to provide compensation exceeding legal minimums. Their ultimate desire is Arkane's continued existence, with employees having a voice in any decisions regarding a potential buyer. Should closure be inevitable, the STJV insists on significant financial provisions for all affected staff, including a substantial redundancy payment, two years of re-employment support, and resources for training and new studio creation, along with compensation for independent contractors affected by contract breaches.

These demands are considerable, yet the union underscores Microsoft's virtually unlimited financial capacity, with a net income of $36.6 billion in a recent quarter. While Xbox's contribution to this sum may be modest, it is undeniably part of the larger Microsoft entity, making the studio's fate a corporate responsibility. As of now, Arkane's future remains uncertain. The studio was among those impacted by recent layoffs at Xbox, though there have been indications of a possible acquisition by a new owner. This situation underscores the critical importance of corporate responsibility and ethical conduct in the global business landscape, particularly when powerful entities make decisions that profoundly affect the livelihoods of their workforce. It serves as a reminder that even in competitive industries, the human element and fair treatment must remain paramount.
