No Man's Sky Soars to iOS Devices, Bringing Full Universe to Mobile Gamers
Jane McGonigalAfter a decade since its initial launch, the vast cosmic adventure of No Man's Sky is making its grand debut on mobile platforms. Hello Games has announced that its acclaimed open-world sci-fi game will be available for iPhone and iPad users this October, with pre-orders already underway. This remarkable mobile adaptation will feature every content update released over the past ten years, and impressively, it is designed to run seamlessly on devices as far back as the iPhone 11. This technological marvel was significantly aided by the ongoing development of Light No Fire, Hello Games' highly anticipated follow-up to No Man's Sky.
No Man's Sky's Mobile Frontier: A Technical Triumph
During a recent virtual press briefing, Hello Games founder Sean Murray shared insights into the ambitious mobile porting project. Development commenced approximately three years ago, paralleling the timeline for the game's Mac port released in 2023. Murray candidly admitted that most experienced game developers would deem it impractical to achieve a smooth performance of such a complex game on a smartphone. However, the team at Hello Games embraced this "impossible" challenge with enthusiasm.
The outcome is nothing short of astounding. The mobile iteration of No Man's Sky encompasses all updates to date, including the September "Cosmos" DLC. The only initial exclusions are settlements and multiplayer functionalities, mirroring the Nintendo Switch launch. Yet, Murray hinted that these features might be introduced later, contingent on player feedback. The mobile version boasts fully integrated touch controls, a revamped menu system, and comprehensive support for external controllers, as well as mouse and keyboard input on iPads.
Perhaps most astonishing is the broad compatibility of the game. Murray confirmed that No Man's Sky will be playable on any iPhone from the 11 series upwards, and on iPad Air Generation 3 and newer models. Furthermore, the entire game, packed with all its content, occupies less than 5 GB of storage space. This optimization, Murray explained, stems from Hello Games' continuous efforts over the years to ensure the game ran efficiently on its original platform, the PlayStation 4. Crucially, some of the significant mobile optimization breakthroughs were a direct result of the work being done on Light No Fire. "To bring it to iPhone and iPad, we’ll have, without people realizing it over the last few years, resulted in a better experience on those other platforms," Murray elaborated, highlighting how the shared engine and performance enhancements from Light No Fire benefited both projects.
No Man's Sky is set to arrive on iPhone and iPad on October 28th, priced at $19.99, with a free trial option available for players to experience the game before purchasing. Light No Fire, though a critical catalyst for these advancements, still awaits an official release date.
The successful launch of No Man's Sky on mobile devices is a testament to Hello Games' persistent innovation and dedication. It showcases that even the most ambitious gaming experiences can be adapted for new platforms through relentless optimization and a visionary approach. This move not only expands the game's reach but also demonstrates how cross-platform development can lead to unforeseen benefits and improved performance across an entire ecosystem of games. For mobile gamers, this opens up a new realm of exploration, previously confined to larger screens, affirming the potential of handheld devices to deliver truly epic adventures.
