Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 Consoles

Sony is democratizing its advanced AI-powered upscaling technology, making a feature previously reserved for the PS5 Pro accessible to standard PlayStation 5 console owners. This move promises to elevate the visual fidelity and stability of games for a wider player base, marking a significant enhancement in gaming experience on the base console.

Today, Sony unveiled Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an evolution of its existing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology. While PSSR has been a hallmark of the PS5 Pro since its debut, leveraging AI to render sharper and more stable game visuals, QSSR is meticulously engineered for the less powerful standard PS5. This breakthrough was achieved through a streamlined neural network architecture and a highly optimized implementation, a direct outcome of Project Amethyst, a collaborative endeavor with AMD.

While PSSR will continue to represent the pinnacle of upscaling on the PS5 Pro, QSSR is poised to deliver noticeable improvements in image clarity and stability on the standard PS5. This ensures that even without the Pro's dedicated hardware, players can enjoy a more refined visual experience.

The initial beneficiaries of QSSR are two highly anticipated titles: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games are slated to receive patches today that integrate QSSR as an optional graphics setting. Insomniac, the developer behind Wolverine, highlights that the technology will reveal greater detail and crispness in the game's environments. Similarly, Sucker Punch, the studio behind Ghost of Yōtei, notes that QSSR will sharpen fine details and enhance temporal stability within their game world.

The deployment of this technology will not be confined to just these two titles. Sony has expressed its intention to make QSSR widely available to PlayStation developers, paving the way for a multitude of future PS5 games to incorporate AI-assisted upscaling. Although QSSR may not replicate the exact performance of PSSR on the PS5 Pro, its introduction offers developers an invaluable tool to strike an optimal balance between resolution, image quality, and performance on the standard console, ultimately enriching the gaming landscape for all.

Initial assessments from Digital Foundry indicate that QSSR on the standard PS5, which lacks the dedicated machine-learning hardware of the Pro, has more conservative performance goals. This suggests that developers might need to target lower internal and output resolutions when employing QSSR, differentiating it from the 4K output typically associated with PSSR on the PS5 Pro. Daniel Craig, Sony's principal graphics R&D engineer, informed Digital Foundry that QSSR acts as a near drop-in replacement for games already supporting PSSR, requiring minimal fine-tuning in some instances, often just a few days of development effort.

This strategic rollout of QSSR underscores Sony's commitment to enhancing the gaming experience across its entire PlayStation 5 ecosystem. By extending sophisticated AI upscaling capabilities to the standard console, Sony empowers more players to enjoy visually richer and more immersive gameplay, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to console technology and accessibility.
