South Asian Filmmakers Compete for $150,000 at Tasveer Film Market, Attracting Netflix and Aamir Khan Pictures

The third Tasveer Film Market, held in conjunction with the 21st Tasveer Film Festival in Seattle from October 13-18, is set to distribute $150,000 in grants to South Asian filmmakers globally. This year's market features 12 fiction and documentary films in late-stage development for its 'Tasveer Market Selects' category, alongside nine short film projects shortlisted for the 'Tasveer Film Fund'. These initiatives aim to provide crucial financial support and industry exposure to emerging and established talent within the South Asian filmmaking community.

A significant portion of the funding, specifically $140,000, will be allocated to the shortlisted short films through the Netflix-backed Tasveer Film Fund Pitch. During this event, finalists will present their work to a distinguished panel of producers and filmmakers, with four projects each receiving a $35,000 production grant. Additionally, the 'Market Selects' titles will be evaluated by a separate jury, which will award two films $5,000 each. Beyond the financial awards, participants will benefit from one-on-one mentorship sessions with industry professionals, and new programs like Tasveer EDU will offer year-round training in various aspects of film production and distribution. Esteemed companies such as Zero Gravity Management, Aamir Khan Pictures, EST Studios, Netflix, Wieden+Kennedy, and Buffalo 8 are sending representatives, highlighting the market's growing influence and reach.

Tasveer, a non-profit organization established in 2002, has been a steadfast advocate for South Asian voices in cinema, art, and storytelling, addressing themes of caste, gender, and sexuality. Its film market stands out as the first of its kind in North America dedicated to connecting South Asian projects with global industry executives. The organization's commitment extends to community engagement, as demonstrated by its acquisition of the Ark Lodge Cinema in Seattle in 2025, transforming it into the Tasveer Film Center, a venue that showcases international cinema daily. This endeavor reinforces Tasveer's mission to foster cultural understanding and provide a vibrant platform for diverse narratives.

The Tasveer Film Market serves as a powerful platform for nurturing South Asian cinematic talent, offering essential resources and connections that can transform creative visions into reality. By championing diverse stories and providing invaluable industry access, the market not only supports individual filmmakers but also significantly enriches the global film landscape, promoting a more inclusive and vibrant cinematic future.
