Utopai Studios Consolidates Asia-Pacific Operations, Appoints Hyun Park as Regional Head

Utopai Studios recently finalized the consolidation of its Asia-Pacific joint venture, Utopai East, into its worldwide operational structure. This strategic integration sees the appointment of seasoned media executive Hyun Park as the new President of Utopai Studios' Asia-Pacific division. This development signifies a unified approach to the company's diverse regional activities.

This organizational shift brings together the company’s Korean production facilities, its Japanese development initiatives, various regional partnerships, and a portfolio of over 18 film and television endeavors under a single global studio framework. Park's responsibilities will encompass guiding the development, production, and expansion across the entire Asia-Pacific landscape. He will also maintain his pivotal role in leading the overall intellectual property development for Utopai Studios. The studio currently boasts approximately 25 film and television projects in various stages of development and production, with initial releases anticipated in 2027.

Utopai East was established in November 2025 as a collaborative effort between Utopai Studios and Stock Farm Road. Under the leadership of founding CEO Kevin Chong, the venture progressed rapidly from its inception to full operational capacity within ten months. During this period, it established a permanent production base in Korea, developed a robust operational presence in Japan, enhanced its regional artificial intelligence production capabilities, and fostered strong relationships within both the live-action and anime industries. Chong has since transitioned to the role of Chief Operating Officer for Utopai Studios. This strategic consolidation enables a direct connection between creators in Korea and Japan and the company's global development, production, and technological teams, facilitating a seamless workflow. The venture was designed to cultivate East Asian intellectual property for a global audience, leveraging the international appeal of Korean film and television, the widespread popularity of Japanese anime, and the growing global interest in Japanese live-action content. South Korea's content exports reached a record $14.9 billion in 2025, and Japan's anime market hit a record JPY3.84 trillion ($24.2 billion) in 2024, with over half of that revenue originating from international markets. Major platforms like Netflix and Amazon are also increasing their investments in Japanese live-action and animated content for a global viewership. A significant step in this expansion was the acquisition of Alquimista Media, Park’s Seoul-based production company, by Utopai East in February 2026. This acquisition provided Utopai East with its Korean production base and expanded its project pipeline by more than 15 scripted film and television projects. Alquimista Media's recent achievements include an executive producer credit on “Bedford Park,” which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and was subsequently acquired by Sony Pictures Classics after receiving the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Debut Feature. In Japan, Utopai East has assembled a dedicated team focused on developing and adapting Japanese intellectual property for a global audience, collaborating with local creators, producers, and studios, and building connections within the country's live-action and anime sectors. The regional slate includes “Half Moon,” a German-Korean live-action feature written and directed by Hyo-joo Yang, with production scheduled to begin in Germany in early September, supported by Utopai Studios' technology. Park, with over two decades of experience across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, has previously served as head of the global division at CJ ENM’s Studio Dragon, co-head of Warner Bros. Korea, and co-founder of the U.S. streaming platform DramaFever. Cecilia Shen, CEO and co-founder of Utopai Studios, emphasized that Park's blend of creative insight, local market expertise, and international experience makes him the ideal leader for this new phase of Utopai Studios APAC. Park articulated that this presents an opportunity to bridge regional creators and intellectual property with international production resources, utilizing technology to expand the creative possibilities for filmmakers. He believes that the groundwork has been laid, and the next stage involves transforming this foundation into a sustainable platform for Asian narratives to reach audiences worldwide, fostering a future where diverse stories can thrive on a global stage.
