The Crystal Pro: A Leap in Wireless VR Technology
The latest addition to Pimax's diverse VR headset family is the Crystal Pro, boasting full wireless functionality. This headset comes equipped with a Wi-Fi 6E adapter, facilitating a seamless connection to a gaming PC. Pimax takes wireless connectivity further by offering an optional 60G AirLink kit, leveraging 60 GHz 2x2 MIMO for superior bandwidth and a more stable connection, minimizing latency for an uninterrupted virtual experience.
Revolutionary Foveated Streaming for Uncompromised Visuals
At the core of the Crystal Pro's visual prowess is its native foveated streaming capability. Similar to Valve's Steam Frame, this technology utilizes eye-tracking to render high-resolution visuals only where the user is directly looking, while areas outside the central gaze are rendered at a lower resolution. Pimax integrates a 120 Hz Omnivision eye-tracking system to ensure the focal point is streamed in full native quality, promising an imperceptible transition in detail and a consistently crisp image.
Crystal Pro's Display and Optical Advancements
The Crystal Pro features dual QLED displays, each offering a stunning resolution of 2880 x 2880 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It incorporates Mini-LED backlighting with 576 local dimming zones per eye, delivering vibrant colors and deep contrasts with 200 nits of brightness. Despite the ongoing debate about display technologies, Pimax opted for aspheric glass lenses for the Crystal Pro, believing them to be optimal for precision eye-tracking, even if they require a slightly bulkier headset design compared to more compact pancake lenses found in other high-end VR devices.
Next-Generation Controllers for Enhanced Interaction
Pimax is also introducing new ringless VR controllers, drawing inspiration from the innovative designs seen in the Steam Frame. These controllers feature dual triggers, TMR sticks, grip sensing, and a complete array of face buttons, enabling a versatile control scheme. A notable innovation is the central module that allows the left and right pads to combine into a single traditional controller, offering a unique and adaptable input method.
Advanced Tracking Capabilities and Modular Design
The Crystal Pro integrates SLAM 2.0 inside-out tracking, a significant upgrade designed to provide highly accurate and responsive spatial positioning. This system utilizes four cameras, a motion sensor, and infrared illuminators for robust tracking even in low-light conditions, aiming to match the precision of leading VR systems. Furthermore, the Crystal Pro embraces modularity with swappable faceplates, allowing users to add features like full-color passthrough, LiDAR, or Lighthouse support for external tracking. The headset also supports optional over-ear speakers, echoing design principles found in the Valve Index.
Introducing the Pimax Spation Gaming PC
To complement its new VR hardware, Pimax is launching its own gaming PC, the Pimax Spation. This new machine, described as resembling a 'long Steam Machine', is tailored to provide the computing power necessary for an optimal virtual reality experience with Pimax's latest offerings. While these new products promise significant advancements in VR, specific release dates for the Crystal Pro, its accessories, and the Pimax Spation have yet to be announced.
