Ubisoft Discontinues Rainbow Six Mobile, Shifts Focus to Other Projects
Roberta WilliamsUbisoft has decided to cease operations for its mobile iteration of the popular Rainbow Six franchise, Rainbow Six Mobile. This decision, announced by the publisher, will see the game's servers shut down in January 2027, just four years after its initial launch. The move allows the development team to reallocate their efforts towards other key strategic initiatives within the company.
First introduced in a beta phase in September 2022, Rainbow Six Mobile gradually expanded its availability across various global regions before its full international rollout in February 2026. The game was initially conceived as a complete, yet touch-screen optimized, version of the highly successful tactical shooter, Rainbow Six Siege, aiming to bring the intense strategic gameplay to mobile platforms.
Ubisoft had previously emphasized that while the mobile version shared fundamental gameplay mechanics, characters, and maps with its PC and console counterpart, it was entirely reconstructed for mobile devices. This involved creating a brand-new control system specifically designed for touch interfaces and extensive optimization of the user interface and visual elements to enhance the mobile gaming experience.
According to the developers at Ubisoft Montreal, the vision behind the free-to-play Rainbow Six Mobile was not to divert players from their PC or console gaming but to offer a convenient way to engage with their favorite game in short, accessible bursts. It also aimed to introduce millions of new players to the Rainbow Six universe, fostering a broader community. The creative director, Justin Swan, had expressed intentions for the mobile version to evolve into a distinct entity within the franchise.
The original Rainbow Six Siege, which debuted in December 2015, has amassed a player base exceeding 70 million and continues to maintain strong popularity, frequently appearing among the most-played titles on platforms like Steam. While a spinoff, Rainbow Six Extraction, launched in January 2022 to mixed reception, another new title, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Tactics, is anticipated for release in 2027, continuing the franchise's expansion.
The decision to discontinue Rainbow Six Mobile highlights the dynamic nature of the mobile gaming market and Ubisoft's strategic refocusing. Despite efforts to adapt the Siege experience for handheld devices, the company is now directing its resources toward future long-term projects, signaling an evolving roadmap for the Rainbow Six franchise.
